What is a Dental Crown

A crown is the part of a tooth that a person is able to see. It is the exposed part of the tooth that is presented to the outside world. They are the portions of teeth seen in the oral cavity and contribute to the aesthetics of a persons smile. They also hold a function in chewing as well as proper nutritional support.  It is imperative that the crown of the tooth be preserved for fully functioning dental health.


A fully functioning crown can be used to keep a person in top nutritional shape, but if the crown is compromised then a prosthetic dental crown may need to be created for proper oral health.



A dental crown is needed when a tooth is either chipped or decayed.  When the tooth has been compromised then it needs to be rebuilt in order to maintain the integrity of its function. The rebuilding process can be due to trauma, infection, tooth decay, or inherited diseases.

  • How is a dental crown made?

    A dental crown is made by a very skilled dentist who has experience under his belt. Most dentists are able to make a dental crown but it is imperative that you choose the correct dentist for your dental crown creation. 


    ​The first step in dental crown fabrication is to prepare the tooth for the dental crown fitting.  The dentist must first take the damaged or decayed tooth and shape it for the dental crown to be placed. This is usually done under local anesthetic. At our office we are able to apply your anesthesia locally using anesthetic wands that are much smoother and more comfortable than the conventional needle injection. The dentist must then use his equipment to file down the tooth so that the dental crown can be properly fitted. The dental crown must be prepared in such a way as to make sure it fits in the mouth properly. A poorly placed dental crown can be a truly uncomfortable experience. Our dentists have been doing dental crowns for decades and are able to place your dental crown perfectly within millimeter margins. This makes for the most comfortable dental crowns possible.

    ​One the tooth is prepared it is necessary to take an impression of the tooth that was just acted on by the dentist.  The dentist is able to use a soft material to impress the shape of the prepared tooth onto a malleable surface. After this is accomplished he can then use this impression to create your dental crown.  At our office we have top of the line equipment and can make your dental crown as quickly and efficiently as possible. The dental crown is then made from the best possible material. There are many ways a dental crown can be made. 


    Solid ​Gold Dental Crowns: 

    At our office we are able to use gold to create your dental crown. This is the older traditional method of making dental crowns, but we can make these at will if necessary. Some patients prefer these types of dental crowns because they are more stable when first cemented. They have less of a chance of becoming dislodged from the mouth and can typically last longer.


    ​Porcelain Dental Crowns: 

    Porcelain dental crowns are tooth colored dental crowns and can be matched with a dental schematic. This schematic is able to be used to make sure your dental crown matches the rest of your teeth. The porcelain dental crown is the more modern dental crown and is the most preferred by patients due to its aesthetically pleasing property.


    ​Porcelain/Gold Dental Crown Hybrid: 

    There is a third option in which a patient can get porcelain on top and a solid gold dental crown base in order to have the tooth colored properties with the stability of the gold dental crown.
